The packing station is the last stop before an order leaves your warehouse. If it is slow or messy, every order feels it. It is also your last chance to catch a mistake before the customer does.

The good news is you don't need fancy machines to fix it. Most of the time, small changes make the biggest difference. Less reaching, less searching, less lifting and fewer mistakes.

We looked at what warehouse experts and safety guides recommend. Here are 7 simple ways to get more orders out the door, with less effort.

**1. Keep everything within arm's reach**

Every step away from the bench is time lost. Put the things you use most, like tape, labels and cutters, closest to you. Keep less used items further back.

A simple rule from warehouse experts: keep tape, labels and packing materials within easy arm's reach while standing in one spot. If you have to walk or stretch for it, move it. Label shelves and bins too, so anyone can find what they need, even on their first day.

**2. Set the bench at the right height**

Bending over a low bench or reaching up to a high one tires you out fast. Over a full shift, that means slower packing and sore backs.

WorkSafe NZ warns that bending, twisting and reaching are common causes of strains and injuries. A bench close to waist height is a good starting point. If different people share the same station, a height adjustable bench lets everyone set it to suit them. Short breaks and swapping tasks during the day also give tired muscles a rest.

**3. Use the right size box**

A box that is too big wastes time and money. You need more void fill to stop things moving, it costs more to send, and products are more likely to get damaged.

Stock a small range of box sizes that match what you send most often. Research shows that using better fitting boxes can cut void fill use by 20 to 40% and reduce damage. Smaller boxes also take up less room on the truck, so more orders fit on every run.

**4. Make void fill and tape quick to grab**

Packing time adds up when you are wrestling with bubble wrap or hunting for tape. Have void fill ready to pull from a dispenser or machine, not a loose pile on the floor.

A good tape dispenser also helps. It lets you seal a box in one smooth pull, with less waste and fewer crooked or loose seals. Top up tape, labels and void fill before each shift so nobody runs out halfway through an order.

**5. Cut down on paper and screen time**

Every time a packer stops to read a printout or type on a keyboard, packing stops too. Experts suggest keeping computer use at the station to a minimum so packers can focus on packing.

Simple fixes help. Use a scanner instead of typing, print labels at the station, and mount any screen at eye level so you are not looking down all day.

**6. Follow the same steps every time**

When everyone packs the same way, mistakes drop and new staff learn faster. Write a short step by step guide for each station and stick it where people can see it.

Check the order, pick the box, pack, fill, seal, label, done. Keep it that simple. Ask your packers what slows them down, as they often know the best fixes. Training staff across picking, packing and dispatch also means more hands can jump in when it gets busy.

**7. Keep it clean and safe**

A cluttered station is a slow station. Keep two or three bins nearby, one for cardboard, one for soft plastics and one for general waste, so rubbish never builds up on the bench.

Safety gear matters too. Anti fatigue mats, safety cutters and gloves help keep packers comfortable and safe through a long shift. Where possible, slide heavy cartons across the bench rather than lifting them.

**Small changes, big difference**

You don't have to do all 7 at once. Pick one or two, try them for a week and see what changes. Keep an eye on how many orders you pack each hour and how many go out wrong. If both improve, the changes are working. Saving even a few seconds per order adds up fast across a full day of packing.
