Packaging tape options NZ

There are endless options available when it comes to packaging tape, which can be overwhelming. Fortunately, our team have outlined everything you need to consider to make your decision easier.

In this article, we outline the various types of packaging tape, their ideal applications, and their advantages. From sustainability to adhesion to tear ability – read it all below.

Which type of packaging tape should I buy?

Due to the versatile nature of the items it’s applied to, packaging tape has many applications and uses. From containing the contents of shipping boxes to discretely securing small parcels it’s used every day across the country.

Packaging tape is applied with direct pressure with a contact (or water-based) adhesive on one side and a non-adhesive side on the other. Binding two sides of a carton or box in place also forms a seal which, depending on the type of tape, protects the contents from dust, dirt, and moisture

Most tapes are see-through, to minimise their visual impact. Others, including custom or branded packaging tape, are designed to stand out either with warning notices for handlers or with branding that promotes a company’s messaging.

Polypropylene tape

One of the most commonly used packaging tapes is polypropylene, due to its strength, durability, and resistance to breakage. This makes it the perfect tape for all general sealing tasks. This tape is most commonly used in warehouses, distribution centres, and shipping facilities. Its versatility also extends to retail settings where it can be used for bundling products together or for temporary repairs. Polypropylene tape is also one of the most affordable packaging tapes

The downsides of polypropylene tape include that it cannot be torn by hand so should always be used with a dispenser. For companies wishing to focus on sustainability, paper tape will be a more suitable choice.

Vinyl tape

Vinyl tape is stronger, thicker, and able to withstand more tension than polypropylene. It is also more resistant to extreme temperatures, making it more suitable for both freezer and cold storage environments. It can be applied by hand and is relatively quiet during application. Vinyl tape is known for its long-lasting adhesion to paper and cardboard.

Due to its durable adhesive properties, colour-coding capabilities, and high break strains, vinyl tape is often used in warehouses, factories, and construction sites.

PET tape

PET tape is made of Polyethylene terephthalate, which is a common thermoplastic polymer resin. It is an extremely sturdy adhesive tape for closing heavy cartons, palletising, strapping, and bundling. PET tape has extremely high tensile strength, immediate tack and adhesion, resistance to diluted acids and alkalis, and temperature resistance. As a result of this, PET tape is most commonly used in industrial and manufacturing environments where high temperatures and demanding conditions are prevalent.

Our PET tape is easy to unwind and is suitable for recycling.

Gummed tape

Gummed tape is a strong paper-based tape with an adhesive that is activated with water. This means it doesn’t get sticky until you wet it with a specialised dispenser or a sponge. Once the adhesive is set, it forms a permanent bond, making it easy to identify any tampering with the package.

Gummed tape is also more environmentally friendly as it is made with paper and can be recycled. temperature resistant, and visually appealing. Gummed tape is most commonly used in shipping and packaging environments that prioritise security and sustainability.

Printed Messaging Tapes

Branding is a crucial part of e-commerce packaging and tape is a great way to capitalise on it. With customised tape, you can add branded labels with your company colours, logo, or slogan. This helps to enhance the customer experience and keep them coming back for more.

You can also use custom tape to instruct the various freight personnel involved in delivering your packages. For example, a bright red tape with ‘Fragile’ goes a long way to keeping your items safe during transit.

Security tape

To deter package tampering, security tape has printed messages to instruct customers or delivery personnel. Most often, it warns customers to check the package before accepting the delivery. This means any damage caused by the courier can be claimed.

Our security-printed tape is made with high-quality polypropylene and a rubber adhesive. The bold red print communicates the following messages:

  • Security seal: If this seal is broken do not accept the delivery of goods.
  • Stop: If this seal is broken or the package is damaged check the goods before signing the receipt.

Silent tape

Silent tape, also known as quiet tape or low-noise tape, is a type of packaging tape designed to produce minimal noise when it is dispensed. Unlike traditional packaging tapes that can create a loud and disruptive sound when being pulled off the roll or applied to surfaces, silent tape is designed to reduce or eliminate this noise, making it a more discreet and less disruptive option.

Our V-Pro Low Noise Polypropylene tape is made with an acrylic adhesive and ensures a quiet application. It also offers excellent performance in freezer environments. This makes it a versatile choice for various sealing needs, particularly in spaces where noise reduction and temperature considerations are important.

Tartan packing tape

Tartan tape is a general-purpose tape with a conformable backing and a pressure-sensitive hot-melt adhesive. This provides a firm closure for medium-weight boxes that are exposed to normal distribution hazards.

Cellulose tape

Cellulose is a naturally occurring molecule consisting of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen atoms. As a packing tape, it is easy to cut and has a strong natural rubber adhesive base.

Our cellulose tape is great for use with the #1400 Deluxe Counter Dispenser which fits 66m roll sizes. It’s also produced from sustainably harvested plantation timber.

Cellulose tape's strong adhesive and easy cutting make it versatile for tasks ranging from packaging and crafts to labelling, minor repairs, and both office and home use.

Kraft paper tape
